Civil service jobs can be considered to be any career or position in a certain government agency. Civil service jobs can be offered at either the federal, state, or local or regional levels, and will prove to be various in their nature.

All civil service work will be contingent upon meeting very specific requirements imposed by the certain government agency, and will all require successfully passing a civil service exam. For some positions, the civil service exam will include both a written exam and a physical performance exam as well. The nature of the exams will vary depending on the particular position or job and each agency will set forth its own criteria for eligibility for employment.

There may different types of civil service jobs, essentially providing for a myriad of career choices. Among the most obvious of civil service work may probe to be law enforcement. Highway patrol officers, corrections officers, and regular uniformed officers are all considered to be civil service jobs.

However, there are other positions that are also considered to be civil service work. People working for the Department of Motor Vehicles, Veterans Administration, and the Foreign Service are all considered to be civil service jobs. Even public defenders are considered to be civil service work, defending people who cannot personally afford to contract their own legal representation for court.

There many reasons as to why civil service jobs are highly regarded and sought after positions and careers, though the most common may prove to be job security with the possibility of obtaining high salaries in only a few years time.
